MASISI, DR Congo Fighting between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and AFC/M23 fighters continued for a third consecutive day on Friday in the Mahanga area of Masisi territory, in North Kivu province.

A Rwandatribune source in the area said fighting resumed Friday morning, September 11, 2026, following two days of heavy clashes in the area.

Mahanga is located in the Butsike area, in the Nyamaboko First groupement, and is considered an important area in the Osso Banyungu region.

Since Wednesday, government forces, supported by Wazalendo fighters, have attempted to push back AFC/M23 fighters who had been controlling the area.

Residents in areas surrounding Mahanga said the sound of gunfire, including heavy weapons, continued to be heard in different parts of the area where the fighting was taking place.

The clashes have forced some residents to flee their homes, while others remain in areas where they sought refuge.

The fighting has also affected residents’ daily lives, particularly their access to food and other basic necessities, while normal economic activities in the area have been disrupted.

So far, no confirmed figures have been released on the number of people killed or wounded in the fighting.

As the clashes continue, security in Mahanga and surrounding areas remains fragile, with the two sides continuing to fight for control of the area.

Rwandatribune attempted to contact Lieutenant Kalonji, the FARDC spokesman in the area, by telephone, but was unable to reach him by the time this report was published.
