{"id":3087,"date":"2026-07-07T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T07:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rwandatribune.rw\/en\/?p=3087"},"modified":"2026-07-07T09:00:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T07:00:42","slug":"president-kagame-appointed-co-chair-of-un-backed-global-ai-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rwandatribune.rw\/en\/2026\/07\/07\/president-kagame-appointed-co-chair-of-un-backed-global-ai-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"President Kagame Appointed Co-Chair of UN-Backed Global AI Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwandan President Paul Kagame has been appointed as one of the co-chairs of the AI for Good Global Commission, an international body established by the United Nations and its partners to provide strategic guidance on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to improve people&#8217;s lives and reduce global development inequalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commission was launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations agency responsible for information and communication technologies.<br>President Kagame will co-chair the commission alongside Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO of Salesforce, while Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the ITU, will serve as the commission&#8217;s Vice Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commission brings together more than 40 members, including heads of state, leaders of major technology companies, AI experts, and representatives of international organizations.<br>Its mission is to develop recommendations and policy guidance to help countries harness AI to advance healthcare, education, agriculture, economic growth, and other key sectors while ensuring the technology is used responsibly, safely, and for the benefit of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his remarks, President Kagame emphasized that Artificial Intelligence should serve as a catalyst for inclusive development rather than widening the gap between developed and developing nations. He called for stronger international cooperation to ensure that the benefits of AI are shared equitably, particularly with developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commission is expected to hold its inaugural meeting from July 7 to 10, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland, during the AI for Good Global Summit.<br>The event will bring together world leaders, government officials, technology companies, researchers, and AI experts from across the globe to discuss the future of Artificial Intelligence and its role in sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Kagame&#8217;s appointment is widely seen as a recognition of Rwanda&#8217;s growing international leadership in technology and innovation.<br>It also comes as the country continues to invest heavily in digital transformation and Artificial Intelligence while hosting major international forums focused on advancing AI adoption and innovation across Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rwandatribune.rw<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rwandan President Paul Kagame has been appointed as one of the co-chairs of the AI for Good Global Commission, an international body established by the United Nations and its partners to provide strategic guidance on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to improve people&#8217;s lives and reduce global development inequalities.
