{"id":3607,"date":"2026-09-22T17:14:07","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T15:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rwandatribune.rw\/en\/?p=3607"},"modified":"2026-09-22T17:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T15:14:10","slug":"uganda-former-cmi-chief-maj-gen-james-mugabe-birungi-remanded-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rwandatribune.rw\/en\/2026\/09\/22\/uganda-former-cmi-chief-maj-gen-james-mugabe-birungi-remanded-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda: Former CMI Chief Maj Gen James Mugabe Birungi Remanded Again"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Former head of Uganda\u2019s military intelligence agency, the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Maj Gen James Mugabe Birungi, has been remanded in military custody again after a person expected to stand surety for him failed to appear in court.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Birungi appeared before Uganda\u2019s General Court Martial in Makindye, where the proceedings were presided over by Brig Gen Richard Tukachungurwa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court ordered that Birungi remain detained at the Makindye Military Police Barracks until Thursday, September 24, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court is expected to resume hearing his application for temporary release on bail on that date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj Gen Birungi is facing a charge of treachery, a serious offence involving alleged acts of betraying the country or government, alongside other charges related to national security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision to keep him in custody does not mean that he has been found guilty of the charges against him.
