Iraq Accuses Iran of Using White Phosphorus Weapons, Calls for International Investigation

The aftermath of Iran’s strikes on Iraqi territory on Saturday has sparked growing concern, with some Iraqi officials accusing Tehran of using weapons prohibited under international law, including munitions containing white phosphorus.

In a statement, the Freedom Party of Kurdistan said the allegations are based on preliminary assessments of victims injured in the attacks and on the large fires that erupted following the bombardment.

According to the party, the nature of the injuries sustained by civilians and the extensive damage at the strike sites show signs that could be consistent with the use of incendiary weapons.

The party has called on the United Nations (UN), international human rights organizations, and other competent international bodies to launch an independent investigation and deploy experts to the affected areas to determine whether banned weapons were used during the attacks.

It further urged that, if violations of international humanitarian law are confirmed, those responsible should be held accountable.

However, no independent investigation has so far verified these allegations, and Iran has not acknowledged using white phosphorus weapons. As a result, the claims made by the Freedom Party of Kurdistan remain unverified and should be treated as allegations pending independent confirmation.
