Zelensky Strengthens Ties with Trump, Secures Senate Victory During Washington Visit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky used his two-day visit to Washington to reinforce his relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump while securing a significant political boost after the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved legislation aimed at increasing sanctions on Russia.

During talks at the White House, Zelensky and Trump discussed continued U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, European security, and efforts to advance a path toward peace while maintaining pressure on Moscow.

The Senate’s vote marked a diplomatic victory for Kyiv, as lawmakers from both major political parties backed a bill that would impose tougher sanctions on Russia and countries continuing to engage in energy trade with Moscow.

Analysts say the vote underscores that, despite political debates in Washington over support for Ukraine, there remains broad bipartisan backing for measures intended to strengthen Kyiv’s position in its war against Russia.

Zelensky’s visit also reflected his efforts to rebuild relations with Trump after months of tensions over U.S. policy toward Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said the discussions focused on defense cooperation, security guarantees, and ways to increase pressure on Russia to engage in meaningful peace negotiations.

While the Senate vote represents an important political win for Ukraine, the sanctions legislation must still complete the remaining legislative process before it can become law.

The visit comes as Ukraine continues to face Russian military attacks and seeks to reassure its international partners that sustained Western support remains critical to defending its sovereignty and achieving a lasting peace.
