South Africa’s winter initiation season has ended in tragedy once again, with the official death toll rising to 43 young initiates.
The deaths have left dozens of families grieving and asking why their sons failed to return home alive.
According to official figures, Mpumalanga recorded the highest number of deaths with 18 fatalities, followed by the Eastern Cape with 14. Additional deaths were reported in the North West, Limpopo, Gauteng, and the Free State provinces.
Authorities have described the situation as deeply concerning.
During the initiation season, 75 initiates were hospitalized after suffering complications, while 180 others were rescued from illegal initiation schools.
Government officials also uncovered 58 illegal initiation schools, 42 of which were immediately shut down.
Police have opened 150 criminal cases in connection with the incidents and arrested 40 suspects.
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, said the deaths were preventable and urged parents to ensure that their children attend only legally registered initiation schools.
As the initiation season comes to a close, South Africans are once again calling for stronger action against illegal initiation schools and greater accountability for those whose negligence continues to claim the lives of young people.
