Qatar is mourning the passing of its former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died at the age of 74.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Amiri Diwan (Emir’s Office) confirmed his death, describing him as one of the nation’s most influential leaders whose vision played a pivotal role in Qatar’s remarkable transformation.
Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, after assuming power in 1995.During his 18-year reign, he oversaw sweeping political and economic reforms that elevated Qatar into a major regional and global player.
Under his leadership, Qatar successfully leveraged its vast natural gas and oil resources to drive rapid economic growth.
The country invested heavily in infrastructure, expanded its international partnerships, and strengthened its diplomatic influence, earning global recognition for its growing role in regional and international affairs.
He also championed improvements in education, healthcare, public services, and cultural development, helping raise the standard of living for Qatari citizens and laying the foundation for the modern state Qatar is today.
His death is being widely regarded as a significant loss for Qatar, with many remembering him as the architect of the country’s modernization and its emergence as a respected global power.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was the father of Qatar’s current Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who succeeded him in 2013 after he voluntarily transferred power.
