Bill Gates Says AI Could Transform Maternal and Child Healthcare in Africa

American billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has urged African countries to accelerate the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to strengthen healthcare systems, particularly in improving maternal and child health services.

Gates made the remarks during the inaugural Paul E. Farmer Butaro Dialogues on Health Equity and Innovation, held in Butaro, Burera District. The event brought together healthcare experts, government officials, researchers, and development partners from across the world to discuss innovative solutions for improving health equity.

In his keynote address, Gates said AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by enabling the early detection of diseases, supporting doctors in making data-driven clinical decisions, and expanding access to quality medical services for more people.

He warned that delaying the adoption of AI could leave Africa further behind as the rest of the world continues to advance rapidly in digital health technologies.

Rwanda’s First Lady, Jeannette Kagame, who also attended the forum, noted that the solutions needed to reduce maternal and newborn deaths are already well known.

She stressed that the real challenge lies in implementing those solutions effectively and ensuring they reach every community in need.

She emphasized the importance of collaboration among governments, researchers, healthcare providers, and development partners to ensure that medical innovations move beyond research laboratories and are translated into practical healthcare services.

The Butaro Dialogues, named in honor of the late Dr. Paul Farmer, a global health pioneer who championed equitable access to healthcare, focused on how research, technology, and innovation can be harnessed to address some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.

Participants agreed that the adoption of emerging technologies such as AI could play a critical role in reducing disparities in healthcare access between high-income countries and developing nations.
