U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Nicholas Checker to serve as the next United States Ambassador to Rwanda, submitting his name to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.
If confirmed, Checker will succeed Eric Kneedler as Washington’s top diplomat in Kigali.
A former officer of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Checker spent 11 years with the agency before transitioning into diplomacy.
He brings extensive experience in national security, foreign policy, and conflict management across several regions of the world.
Before joining the U.S. Department of State, Checker held a number of senior national security positions, including serving as Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Security Council during President Trump’s first term.
Analysts say Washington’s decision to nominate a diplomat with a strong intelligence and security background could signal a greater emphasis on regional security issues during his tenure in Kigali.
His priorities are expected to include the security situation in the Great Lakes region, strengthening U.S.-Rwanda relations, and developments surrounding the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Checker currently serves as the Director for Southern Africa and Foreign Assistance at the U.S. Department of State. He holds academic qualifications in history, political science, and security studies, reflecting a career that combines intelligence, diplomacy, and strategic policy expertise.
