TEHRAN: Major Concerns in Iran – Has Mojtaba Khamenei Died from His Injuries?

Concerns over the health of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, continue to grow as new unverified reports suggest that he may be in critical condition or may even have died from injuries sustained in an airstrike.

On 7 August, IranWire reported that two individuals said to be close to the administration of President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed that senior Iranian officials were deeply worried about Khamenei’s health.

According to those sources, Khamenei has not met with members of the government since the attack that reportedly killed his father, Ali Khamenei, and rumors about his deteriorating condition have been circulating within the highest levels of the Iranian leadership.

Israeli Media Reports Add to Speculation
New reports published on 8 August indicated that some Israeli media outlets claimed Khamenei was in extremely serious condition and had been transferred to a hospital. However, these claims have not been confirmed by Iranian authorities or by any independent medical source.

No Official Announcement of Death

Although some reports suggest that Khamenei’s death could be announced at any moment, no official statement confirming his death has been issued so far.

For that reason, claims that “Mojtaba Khamenei has died” should be treated as unconfirmed reports, not as established fact.
The situation has drawn even more attention because Khamenei has not appeared in public for an extended period.

Reuters had previously reported that since becoming Iran’s Supreme Leader, no new video or audio recordings of him had been released, although written messages attributed to him have continued to appear.

Injuries from the February 2026 Airstrike
Mojtaba Khamenei was reportedly injured in an airstrike on 28 February 2026, the same attack that allegedly killed his father, Ali Khamenei.

Reuters reported in April that three people close to his family said he had suffered serious injuries to his face and legs, and that the attack had caused significant physical damage.
Since then, his health has remained the subject of intense speculation.

While some Iranian officials have claimed that his injuries were not severe or that he had continued carrying out his duties, his continued absence from public view has fueled ongoing rumors.

What Did President Pezeshkian Say?

On 6 August, President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that contacting Mojtaba Khamenei and gaining access to him had become “extremely difficult,” although he described him as someone who still plays a significant role in the country’s leadership.

That statement has further increased questions about the Supreme Leader’s health and security situation.

A Key Figure in Iran’s Power Structure
Mojtaba Khamenei holds one of the most powerful positions in Iran. As Supreme Leader, he is believed to have decisive influence over the armed forces, security institutions, and major foreign policy decisions.

For that reason, any credible information about his health could have consequences far beyond the condition of a single individual, especially at a time when Iran continues to face major security challenges and tensions with other countries.

As of now, reports claiming that Mojtaba Khamenei has died from his injuries remain unconfirmed by any competent official authority.
