The Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has admitted to ordering the closure of NTV Uganda, Spark TV, and Daily Monitor media outlets.

Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba ordered the closure of these major media houses, which include NTV Uganda, Spark TV, and the Daily Monitor.

According to reports, NTV Uganda and Spark TV immediately suspended their broadcasts in the early hours of Sunday morning after security forces surrounded the premises of the Nation Media Group (NMG), the parent company of these outlets.

This development follows a post by Gen Muhoozi on the X platform (formerly Twitter), where he stated that the decision to shut down the media houses had been made. He also indicated plans to tighten restrictions on media coverage concerning the country’s top leadership.

In his post, he stated:

“Muzehe (President Museveni) has approved my plan to close down NTV and Monitor. We are going to implement it.”

He went on to say that negative news about the country must be vetted by his office before publication.

“From now on, bad news about Uganda must first be approved by my office. In Uganda, I do not believe in media freedom. The media must be guided by those who fought for the revolution.”

Gen Muhoozi ordered that these media outlets must not be allowed to reopen without his explicit permission.

NTV Uganda, Spark TV, and Daily Monitor are all owned by Nation Media Group Uganda, a prominent media conglomerate in the region.

International organizations have strongly condemned the move, calling it unconstitutional, while political analysts continue to question how the President’s son is interfering in state governance and civilian media operations.
