Is Uganda Sliding Back Into Authoritarian Rule? Concerns Grow After Arrests of Opposition Figures

Opposition politicians, human rights organizations, and political analysts in Uganda say the country may be entering a tense political phase following a series of arrests of opposition figures, media restrictions, and allegations of torture.

An analysis published by The Independent reports that the arrest of Erias Lukwago, the former Lord Mayor of Kampala and lawyer to Dr. Kizza Besigye, has heightened political tensions in the country.
Lukwago is facing treason charges, similar to those brought against Besigye—accusations that opposition supporters say are being used to silence dissent.

The situation is being compared by critics to the era of Idi Amin, who ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979, a period widely associated with enforced disappearances, torture, and repression of political opponents.
However, these comparisons remain views expressed by critics and are not confirmed by any independent judicial or neutral authority.

In recent developments, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda, was reported to have ordered the suspension of media houses including Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda.
The decision was condemned by international press freedom organizations, while government officials stated that the actions were part of an ongoing national security investigation.

The government of President Yoweri Museveni maintains that security agencies are operating within the law and that all measures taken are intended to safeguard national stability and security.

While both sides present sharply different interpretations of the situation, debates over political freedoms and human rights continue to intensify in Uganda.
