Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, where he paid tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
During the visit, Gates laid a wreath at the mass grave where more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi are buried, honoring those who lost their lives and standing in solidarity with Rwandans during the remembrance.
He was accompanied by Rwanda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, who guided him through different sections of the memorial.
Gates was briefed on the history of the Genocide, including how it was planned and carried out, the scale of the atrocities, and the devastating impact it had on Rwanda and its people.
He also learned about Rwanda’s remarkable journey of recovery following the Genocide, including efforts to rebuild the nation, promote unity and reconciliation, and achieve sustained development across various sectors.
The visit comes as Bill Gates is in Rwanda on an official trip aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the country’s progress, particularly in healthcare, agriculture, and the use of technology to improve public service delivery.
