The opposition coalition in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), known as C64, has called for former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to be appointed as the chief mediator in talks aimed at resolving the country’s long-running political, security, and governance crises.
The proposal was adopted during a meeting held in Bujumbura on July 6, 2026, which brought together C64 leaders and representatives of religious organizations at the invitation of Évariste Ndayishimiye, who currently serves as Chairperson of the African Union.
C64 leaders, including Martin Fayulu, argued that Obasanjo is the most suitable person to lead the mediation process because of his extensive experience in resolving major conflicts across Africa.
The coalition also urged that the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO) and the Church of Christ in Congo (ECC) be formally included in the mediation efforts, saying both religious institutions enjoy broad public trust and have a proven record of facilitating dialogue between rival parties.
In addition, C64 called on President Félix Tshisekedi to publicly abandon any plans to amend the Constitution, warning that such a move could pave the way for him to seek another term after his current and constitutionally permitted second mandate expires in 2028.
The opposition further stressed that any dialogue aimed at achieving lasting peace and addressing the DRC’s challenges should involve all relevant stakeholders, rather than being organized or controlled solely by the government.
It also insisted that participants in the talks should not be selected exclusively by President Tshisekedi, arguing that the process must be transparent, inclusive, and based on consensus among all parties.
The statement comes as the Congolese government continues to reject any negotiations with former President Joseph Kabila, accusing him of playing a role in the persistent insecurity affecting the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu.
Following the meeting, the Burundian Presidency issued a statement praising the constructive atmosphere of the discussions.
President Ndayishimiye reaffirmed that sustainable peace in the DRC and the wider Great Lakes region can only be achieved through inclusive dialogue built on mutual understanding and consensus.
