Fighting has continued for some time in South Kivu Province, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), pitting the MRDP-Twirwaneho group against an alliance involving the Congolese army, Burundi forces, and armed groups including the FDLR and Wazalendo.

One of the commanders deployed in the Minembwe area has drawn attention after members of the Hiboux Special Forces were seen wearing unusual combat gear.

These special forces, reportedly deployed to confront MRDP-Twirwaneho, which is accused of operating in alliance with the M23 movement, have appeared in distinctive military attire.

Images of the soldiers have attracted significant attention on social media, with some users describing the equipment as among the heavy weaponry being used by the FARDC against their opponents.

The soldiers are understood to belong to the Hiboux Special Forces, a unit reportedly deployed to areas considered particularly difficult, especially along major front lines.

A Rwanda Tribune source based in Minembwe Centre reports that the group of commandos is currently positioned about seven kilometres from Minembwe Centre, alongside Congolese forces, Burundian troops, FDLR elements and Mai-Mai fighters.
Minembwe is regarded as the main urban centre of Fizi Territory.

Residents in the area have frequently reported attacks involving FARDC forces, who accuse local communities of supporting or sheltering fighters from MRDP-Twirwaneho and M23.

The presence of the Hiboux Special Forces in the area comes amid continued tensions and fighting in the wider Minembwe region.
