Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially announced his country’s support for former President Macky Sall’s candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.
In a statement issued on July 20, 2026, Senegal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said President Faye had instructed the government and the country’s diplomatic network to fully mobilize in support of Sall’s campaign among UN member states.
The announcement came days after Macky Sall met President Faye in Dakar to present his bid. Sall later traveled to Moscow, where he held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as part of his international campaign.
The endorsement marks a significant political shift, as Faye’s former political allies in the ruling Pastef party had long criticized Macky Sall’s administration and previously called for him to face trial over his record in office.
Political observers say the move reflects Faye’s effort to place Senegal’s diplomatic interests above domestic political divisions, while also positioning himself ahead of key elections expected in 2027.
