RDC:Kabila Condemns Detention of Opposition Figures

Former Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila has accused the current government of suppressing opposition figures, journalists and human rights defenders, calling for democracy and fundamental freedoms to be respected.

In a message addressed to the Congolese people on October 9, 2026, Kabila said the country was facing several challenges, including the detention of opposition members, human rights activists and journalists.

He also criticized what he described as unpunished killings and rising corruption within government institutions.

Kabila said these problems were undermining the functioning of state institutions and weakening public confidence in the country’s leadership.

He called on the DRC to return to democratic principles, uphold the rule of law and protect citizens’ rights and freedoms.

Among the 12 proposals he presented in May 2025 were the restoration of democracy, the establishment of a state governed by the rule of law, and the restoration of fundamental freedoms.

Kabila argued that these proposals had not been adequately addressed, adding that the current situation offered little hope for meaningful change.

He made the allegations in a message criticizing the governance of President Félix Tshisekedi’s administration, although he did not explicitly mention Tshisekedi by name in some parts of the statement.

So far, Kabila’s remarks remain allegations and his personal assessment of the country’s governance.

A comprehensive assessment of the claims would also require responses from the institutions concerned.
