“Crimes of murder and looting are what could lead to the destruction of the country, and God cannot continue to look on while such things persist.”
During a Mass broadcast on Radio Maria on Friday, Father Sadiki Kenemana, the Senior Priest of Ngozi, warned the Burundian authorities that they need to change the way they govern, otherwise misfortunes could eventually befall the current leadership.
Father Kenemana based his message on the prophecy of Nahum in the Bible, in which God called on the people of the city of Nineveh to change their ways, but they refused. God later destroyed the city.
Father Kenemana said the sins and wrongdoing that have become widespread in Burundi are not different from those that were committed in Nineveh.
He said:
“There is nothing that lasts forever in this country. You find people being killed in forests, others being abducted, widespread looting of property, violence, and the denial of people’s freedom. All these things are present in this country.”
He added:
“Theft, bloodshed and putting people into despair will all come to an end, because nothing lasts forever.”
Father Sadiki Kenemana called on Burundians to remain patient, saying that the time has come for the suffering affecting the country to eventually come to an end.
His remarks come at a time when reports continue to circulate of people being abducted and others being killed in Burundi, with some people reportedly having their property seized while others face violence from the Imbonerakure, a youth group affiliated with the ruling CNDD-FDD party.
