KIGOMA— Security forces in Tanzania’s Kigoma region have launched a major operation to hunt down, arrest, and deport undocumented foreigners, Rwanda tribune reports.

The security sweep heavily targets border areas separating Tanzania from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to official directives, anyone found living or working illegally in the country will face immediate legal prosecution followed by deportation.

Human rights organizations have urged that this operation be conducted in compliance with international laws protecting refugees and asylum seekers, to ensure that no individuals are forcibly returned to places where their lives could be in danger.

Analysts say this crackdown could affect thousands of foreigners residing or working in Tanzania without complete documentation, especially in border areas. This mass expulsion of foreigners mirrors a previous incident in 2013, when the country’s former President, Jakaya Kikwete, expelled thousands of Rwandans from Tanzania.
