Kigali — The family of former Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana says some of its members have been targeted in cyberattacks, including the alleged hacking of their social media accounts.

Marie Rose Habyarimana, the daughter of the former president, made the claims in an interview broadcast by media outlets opposed to Rwanda’s government.

She said accounts belonging to her brother Jean Luc Habyarimana, her sister Jeanne Habyarimana and other family members had been compromised.

The accounts she said were targeted included WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter.

Marie Rose Habyarimana also said other accounts had been opened using their names to collect money allegedly intended to support armed groups fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Political analysts, however, say the allegations could also be an attempt by the Habyarimana family to spread its message and increase support for the FDLR movement.

Jean Luc Habyarimana has openly expressed support for FDLR, according to the report, and recently met Lieutenant General Victor Byiringiro at the FDLR headquarters in the Pinga area.

Jean Luc Habyarimana has also been accused of seeking to bring together armed groups with the aim of destabilising Rwanda.

The report says he has made several trips to Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he has allegedly been involved in efforts to bring together FDLR, RUD-Urunana and CNRD/FLN.

The groups are largely made up of former members of the ex-FAR army and Interahamwe, according to the report.
