Sir Keir Starmer has officially resigned as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after submitting his resignation to King Charles III during a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace, bringing his tenure as head of government to an end.
Before traveling to Buckingham Palace, Starmer delivered his final address to the nation outside 10 Downing Street. In his speech, he thanked the British people for the trust they had placed in him and expressed his gratitude to members of his government for their support and cooperation throughout his time in office.
In accordance with the United Kingdom’s constitutional conventions, an outgoing Prime Minister formally submits their resignation to the monarch before a successor is invited to form a new government.
Following Starmer’s resignation, King Charles III invited Andy Burnham to form a new government, making him the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister.
The transfer of power took place in line with Britain’s long-standing democratic traditions and constitutional procedures, with the new administration assuming office immediately after receiving the King’s approval.
Starmer’s resignation comes after recent political developments in the United Kingdom, including a change in the leadership of the Labour Party, which ultimately led to the appointment of a new Prime Minister.
